We feature Wheaton middle school band students in a side-by-side performance with the Wheaton Municipal Band of special literature for the occasion, plus wonderful marches, show tunes and an overture to kick off the season with the usual splendor! Our special guest for the side-by-side will be Wheaton composer Timothy Loest (sponsored by FJH Music Publishing Company).

Overtures and operatic classics abound on the 200th birthday of these beloved composers. Students from Wheaton High Schools will join the WMB to perform Wagner’s “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” and other favorites.

On December 22, 2012, the WMB performed for music leaders from around the world at the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Tonight we share with our park audience several selections from that historic performance.

Our guest conductor is James Christensen, retired music director for Walt Disney Productions. Maestro Christenen is a renowned arranger and composer whose works are heard at theme parks around the world. Along with classic children’s music and Disney tunes, you can count on singing “Happy Birthday” as well! Mildred J. Hill, who wrote the simple Happy Birthday tune, was a school teacher born in Louisville, Kentucky on this day, June 27, in 1859.

We celebrate the centennial of the birth of legendary American composer and conductor Morton Gould with many of his favorite audience pleasers. Special guest Abby G. Burton joins us for stories of her father’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, his induction as one of the Kennedy Center Honorees, and his friendship with Benny Goodman (and other musical celebrities of the day)! MSgt Jay Niepoetter, United States Marine Band and alumnus of the Wheaton Municipal Band, joins us as special clarinet soloist.
