Conductor Bruce Moss is a professor and the Director of Bands at Bowling Green State University. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University of Illinois, and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University, studying conducting with Harry Begian, John Paynter, and Craig Kirchhoff. His distinguished career that began at York High School in Elmhurst, Ill., includes an unprecedented 30-year tenure with the Wheaton Municipal Band, during which the ensemble has gained international recognition, performing at Petrillo Music Shell in Chicago’s Grant Park, for the American School Band Director’s Association and for the PBS “American Experience” series. His innovative programming that has a wide range of audience appeal helps to bring literally thousands of enthusiastic audience members to Wheaton’s Memorial Park from all areas of the Chicago suburbs and beyond.
Moss has served as guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He is Music Director of Ohio Ambassadors of Music, an honor band and chorus that frequently travel on performance tours in seven European countries. An elected member of the American Bandmasters Association, he also serves as Past President of the College Band Directors National Association, North Central Division, and as National Vice President for Professional Relations of Kappa Kappa Psi, Honorary Band Fraternity.
Guests appearing with the band during Moss’ tenure have included luminaries such as William Warfield and Allen Vizzutti, as well as soloists from numerous major orchestras and Washington’s premier service bands. Guest conductors and composers who have appeared with the band include Harry Begian, Richard Blatti, Kenneth Bloomquist, Alan Bonner, John Bourgeois, Mark Camphouse, Michael Colburn, Ray Cramer, James Croft, Timothy Foley, Robert Foster, John Locke, Arnald Gabriel, Mark Kelly, Francis McBeth, David Waybright, Myron Welch, John Whitwell, Frank Wickes and Don Wilcox.
